2003 Mach 1 Starter Removal

Question:

I believe I have a bad starter in my 2003 Mustang Mach 1, but need to pull it to be bench tested.

I can't access the top bolt from underneath. Is it necessary to pull the inner fender to remove and swap the starter?

Thanks!

Answer:

Sorry for the long time to reply. 2003 Mach 1 Starter Removal is possible without removing the inner fender. There is an access port or flap, that you'll find when you remove the passenger side wheel of your 03 Mustang.

It's still not an easy job to get to that bolt, but it is possible. Unfortunately, removing the bolt in fox body Mustangs requires thin arms and going mostly by touch.

If you want to go to the trouble, it's definitely easier without an inner fender. Just a lot more time consuming.

Getting a long extension and using a movable socket adapter helps.

P.S. I've also seen a lot of these, that are not starter problems, but wiring issues. The last one I did, took a wire by wire test, right from the harness on the firewall.

Good Luck!

Which Bolt on the 2003 Mach 1 Starter ?
by: Richard

Starter mounting bolt or the starter terminal of the solenoid?

I can get one of these out pretty fast I use a wrench to break the mounting bolts free and a 1/4 inch set with swivels and a GOOD assortment of extensions. I have done this in 20 to 30 minutes.

If all you want to do is add a pigtail for testing then only drop the starter off the mounting, add a pigtail and replace it, 20 minutes.

What you want to do when you replace these is make a pigtail for testing later... saves grief.

The pigtail I refer to is a 6 -8 inch piece of 14 gauge wire with a terminal end on the starer solenoid START terminal and a butt connecter on the hanging end.

These times are for a real tech on a lift, your time in a driveway may vary. (Sort of like mileage.)

At least the next time this is an issue and if you keep any car long enough it will be... You will be prepared.
